Richard Diebenkorn - Awe-Inspiring
During this past week, I have been visiting museums and galleries in Southern California. Yesterday, at the OCMA, Newport Beach, I was able to view an incredible exhibition, Richard Diebenkorn: The Ocean Park Series. This large all encompassing show displays the artists oeuvre in collage, prints, drawings and paintings. Being a sucker for small intimate pieces, I went gaga over his paintings on the lids of cigar boxes. These were painted beautifully as gifts for his friends. Labels peaked through the paint and were incorporated into a collage-like affect. Then of course displayed were the stars of the show, his large-scale Ocean Park canvases.
Of the Ocean Park Series, my favorite were painted in 1975. The reason has to do with his choice of bold color, value themes, and all the subtle activity in his lively paint applications. These oil and charcoal on canvases display solved struggles. Technically speaking I observed straight edges vs curved, translucent scumbled brushstrokes, drips, wipes, yet most enticing were the images that survive underneath each hard earned expression.
